In a joint promotion touring the Rugby League World Cup, students from Bishop Viard College were challenged to become champions behind the wheel.
Drive For Life
While putting young people and cars together conjures up images of boy racers, driving is actually a genuine employment option with opportunities in fast food delivery, couriers, public transport and competitive motor sport. Drive for Life was first introduced in 2007 as a safe driving programme with presentations and testimonials from young people whose lives have been impacted by driving accidents.
For the initial launch Tamati Paul was brought to Porirua to share his compelling story with local students. Tamati, a promising young athlete, was the victim of an horrific drunk driving accident. He has overcome his disabling injuries and become a inspirational voice for safe driving.
In 2009 students from Bishop Viard and Porirua College were asked how they could become champions behind the wheel when they queued to see the Rugby League World Cup. The World Cup Roadshow was used as a backdrop for the safe driving message and had the support of many League champions from the Porirua area.
Over the lst 12months 170 young people have gained their learner licence, 20 have gained their restricted and 4 gained their full licence after participating in this programme. Over 90 driver assessments have been completed providing young drivers with feedback and advice from an authorised assessor.
Have driving licence will travel! Safe driving habits and a full driving licence can lead to a good job
