Partnerships in Health Promotion
Students, hands on, at the National Simulation Suite at Wellington Hospital
Partnerships are a key part of the Partners Porirua philosophy so when health and lifestyle was identified as a community issue the obvious partners were Whitireia Polytechnic, Massey University, Ora Toa Health and the Capital and Coast District Health Board.
In order to increase awareness of the variety of roles and career opportunities available in health such as flight nursing, physiotherapy, technicians, support workers and community healthcare, students involved in the programme have toured the hospital, been on board the surgical bus, undertaken work experience.
In working with partners such as Whitireia Polytech and Ora Toa Health, students are also looking at the health issues associated with diet and lifestyle to improve the overall wellbeing of our community. Through community awareness we hope that the impact of diseases such as diabetes and obesity can be lessened.
Partnerships have included:
CCDHB Whitireia Polytechnic and Porirua Colleges - Including a 'hands-on' interactive experience at the National Simulation Suite
Aotea College and Whitireia Polytech - Health and nutrition promotion for year 11 students working alongside nursing tutors from Whitireia's Bachelor of Nursing Programme.
Porirua College and Ora Toa Health - Nurses from Ora Toa worked alongside the teacher to deliver unit standards in health and food technology.
