Working in Health

Students test their capabilities at the simulation suite

Partners Porirua health programme is now into its third year which allows students to achieve nationally recognised qualifications in health and consequently gain work placements.

The partnership was initiated by Partners Porirua working with Healthcare New Zealand, and Wellcare Education. The objective was an introduction to working in the health sector for students from the local colleges.

The students spent one day a week gaining practical experience at rest homes and residential care facilities undertaking health based study.

The partners recognised the need to develop the skill base of local youth and develop career pathways to meet future employment needs.

Feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive. Personal testimonies indicate the programme has made a real difference to their attitudes to the elderly and the students have become more focused on work ethics and their future plans.

Of the students graduating from last years programme, five students subsequently gained part time work in residental care facilities and six have gone on to tertiary health based study.
