2010 Young Employee Award Winners
Nichola Ahnau - Reds Hairdressing
Nichola's positive attitude and desire to learn have resulted in her becoming an extremely successful stylist. Nichola left school at 16 and Reds Hairdressing has been her only employer since December 2004. She has completed a National Certificate in Hairdressing during this time.
At The Porirua Business Excellence Awards function held on 29th October, Nichola was named the 2010 Young Employee of the Year.
Nichola has achieved many successes:

Her most recent success was a place on an international photo shoot assisting well known national stylist, Grant Bettjeman.

Nichola was placed 2nd in the 2009 NZARH regional competition - Men's styling award

As a senior stylist Nichola shows leadership by educating and monitoring junior team members

Lorraine Betham - Peppermill Delicatessen
Employed with the Peppermill Deli since they first opened in November 2005, Lorraine started as a waitress and soon moved onto Duty Manager role in 2006 and in recent months she has taken on the entire running of the Deli as the Cafe Manager.
Lorraine is known to be amazingly enthusiastic and positive about any challenge thrown her way. She is currently looking at how to improve the service levels at the Peppermill through a staff incentive scheme which she will monitor. From an owners perspective Lorraine has become completely indispensable.
I have always been impressed by her honestly and loyalty as she will come to me as an owner if she thinks there is something I need to address or deal with." says Belinda Wotton owner Peppermill Delicatessen.
Tyla Schmidt-Schollee - Work and Income
Tyla commenced as a Case Manager under the Ministry's cadet programme in April 2008 and she now specializes in Youth case manager in Job Search Service and she Co-ordinates seminars.
Tyla has achieved many successes:

Certificate in Public Service Sector Level 4 and is awaiting graduation

Tyla has planned and set up Work and Income Youth Expo's over the past two years at the Te Rauparaha Arena - resulting in youth employment and training outcomes

Since July 2009 she has placed 144 young people into training through Work and Income contracted services
Johnny Tuimalo & Miracle Siamomua - Porirua City Council - Assistant Gardeners
These two young men were unemployed and started work with the Council in January 2010 on a 6 month Work and Income funded Community Max Scheme. The two have done a fantastic job starting the restoration of Bothamley Park.
As a result of their commitment to their work and unexpected additional funding the scheme, the employment contracts have now been extended for Johnny and Miracle.
Both have many successes:

They have the best attendance records of any Community Max young people in the Wellington region.

They have improved their driving skills, learnt how to use safely a chain saw and apply herbicides and have nationally recognized qualifications for these purposes. This will make them more employable at the end of the scheme

At the recent leaving celebration of the Council's Chief Executive, Miracle and Johnny joined permanent members of staff and did a Haka in front of many dignitaries and also supported an Island Dance group at the same event.
They are a significant asset to my teams and bring new life to an aging workforce but more importantly have an excellent work ethic and also know how integrate themselves into multi age, ability and race workforce." says Bill Inge, Manager Parks & Reserves, "They are the best we have found".
