Developing Youth for the Working World

ESR and Titahi Bay Intermediate work on a science extension

It's never too soon to enthuse young people about the working world whether they are primary school children or young adults about to leave school to start their working lives. With that mission in mind Partners Porirua brings business people into schools to create enthusiasm, transfer skills and show how employment is relevant to our lives.

enthusing young people about the working world is the first stage in ensuring that all our young people can contribute towards and participate in the benefits of a healthy and functioning society."

We start by ensuring that young people, from primary and intermediate schools, understand the relevance, the value and the meaning of the working world. We introduce them to the role models, the scientists, the community people, the engineers and technologists. We help them to look at their neighborhoods from a work perspective, to look at the environment, to examine technology, to consider sustainability and simply to undertake projects that are of value to the community. Through that exposure we excite them about the working world.

A number of projects with local primary schools include investigations based around water or the environment.  Bishop Viard College worked with Porirua City Council development an environmental programme for their school.

When they are older and about to leave school Partners Porirua introduces young people to the working world by identifying their strengths and interests, introducing them to the options, advising them on further education or work experience opportunities and ultimately guiding them towards the workplace.

The strength of Partners Porirua is in building relevant relationships between businesses, schools and the community to benefit our young people. Now more than ever, in a recession, young people need our help to transition into work or further education and keeping them aware and excited about the working world will help that transition.
